DEFINITIONS

CONSTABLE:
A non-hereditary administrator of a keep or castle, appointed by the owner/holder to govern it.
SHERIFF:
The royally-appointed chief judicial officer of a Shire. Usually only found where the King desired a firmer hand in a Shire, or wished to send the Earl of a particular Shire a message saying "I trust this person more than I trust you".
BAILIFF:
A person apointed to run a manor on behalf of the owner, OR one of several assistants to a Sheriff in a given Shire.
SHIRE:
An administrative district, a province. Usually held by an Earl, with anywhere from two to five Barons below them.
HOLD:
A sub-division of a Shire, a precinct. Usually held by a Baron, with around 20 Manors within the Hold.
MANOR:
A fortified stronghold and an associated village. Usually held by a Knight, and run by them or a Constable. About 20 Manors would make up a Barony.
