THE CITY OF GOLD

As the economic and population heart of the Denlor Plains is this mighty walled city with a larger population than many other countries. While they have an enviable standard of living by Trishorian standards, even their Denlor Plains peers perceive them as smug snobs. However, Sogambrese care little about this image; they are too busy building up and protecting their fortunes to care what other peons may say.

Militarily Sogambrium is not a powerhouse, despite its population. Three factors are at play. First, it has rich and powerful neighbors, who are generally content to leave the city alone, so long as the wealth it generates continues to line their own coffers. Their troops bear the brunt of any serious external threat long before the Sogambrese are even aware of the issue. This keeps Sogambrium's costs down, profits up, and continues the syngergistic cycle of high profits leading to increased purchases from neighboring lands.

The next two factors are easier to quantify. The second reason that Sogambrium does not require a massive military force is the sheer size of the city, and its already existing fortifications. It would require an enormous army just to deal with the number of able-bodied defenders (trained or not), and they would have the benefit of some of the finest fortifications in all of Trishore. Concentric rings of massive walls provide robust defense, and the outermost wall -- the famed "Black Bastion" -- stands over 50' tall, is glass smooth, and heavily reinforced with magic. Finally, what troops Sogambrium does field are simply the best available. Hundreds of plate mail clad heavy foot with long swords, hundreds more with heavy crossbows, plus alomst a thousand more mounted and light foot troops provide the core of a well trained and disciplined City Guard. They are augmented by hundreds of Mages and Priests of all levels. Throw in the many hundreds of willing Watch Officers, and one can see why a major standing army is not required.

BACKGROUND

Originally a small Sapoy village at the time of the Migration Wars, the Mantaten conquerors soon moved in as well. Seeing an opportunity to gain converts, treat the injured and needy from the Migration Wars and to help consolidate the Mantaten hold on the region, Syphide’s Myrebarre moved her seat to the town at this time. Sogambrium survived Firefall, the town again being mentioned as part of Warcinet, in Bearclaw's "Union" during the 1700s.

It was at this time that the first of the city’s famed walls were erected. With the collapse of the Talossian state west of Lake Asino in 3030, nascent political structures around the Lake were given space to create the Arsoshi Union, and Sogambrium was named its capital. As capital the city grew quickly, and its mighty walls were extended twice to enclose its population. When the Union was overthrown in 3862, Sogambrium declared its Free City status, and was able to defend its demand long enough to see it become reality.
