MAPS

A military state faced by relentless Humanoid attacks, the remarkable fact is how happy the populace is on average. Magic is frowned upon, and theft is a capital crime, but a strong shield arm and a quick sword are welcome. Also, anyone of Sapoy extraction is always welcomed, as this is the region represented one of the last strongholds of the race after the Migration Wars. Theirs is a life of hardscrabble farming between cold winters, or herding hardy cattle on the Lower Plains, or military service facing an enemy all recognize they can never vanquish. Relations with their Elvish neighbors to the West are cordial but not warm (every time there is an Illabode incursion on this front there is some mutual finger pointing), but financial, logistical and military support is usually forthcoming from their allies in the Andron Kingdom. Military service is mandatory for all natives, and is regarded without pleasure, but also without much resistance: everyone knows what happens when Orcs reach populated areas.

The army is predominantly foot based, and geared to combat Goblinoids of all sizes as their key foes. Elite heavy foot, long bow troops trained for accuracy at long range, and specialist catapult and ballista trained back ups are all examples of how the army fights their much more numerous foe. The leaders are all selected for prowess and smarts, using creativity as often as brute force. For example, a significant Marine contingent is always at sea, ready to outflank any near shore activity, and seven battalions of Ranger troops can wreak havoc behind enemy lines. In all, almost 9,000 regular army troops are in the field at all times, with over 2,000 "ready" militia troops on call as well. These numbers can be doubled in less than one week, mostly with trained militia. Elvish archers and scouts will willingly assist in times of need within a matter of days as well. Moreover, in the summer and fall, Andronese troops can be fielded within a month.

BACKGROUND

Sapoy tribespeople are known to have lived on the Lower Plains and along the Silverflow River since the earliest human migrations. They rapidly learned to cooperate and defend themselves, for Illabode has always been a threat to anyone living in the region. Cadorna has a rich and colourful history, alive with tales of mighty kings, powerful armies and heroic last stands. Unlike many other long-established Kingdoms there has been little internecine squabbling: any sign of weakness due to a civil war would be quickly exploited by their foes, and all Cadornians know this well. The rich land and hardworking inhabitants would enjoy a high standard of living were it not for the demands of their costly defenses, but all willingly contribute when certain death or slavery is the only other option.
