RACES

Upon the continent of modern day Trishore (4028 PF - post Firefall) there are many different races (Dwarves, Elves, etc.), and there are two distinct types of humans, the Althoi and the Sesperay. The proper name for these types is an "Archal". The main difference between the two archals is that the Althoi bear gender-neutral offspring, with gender not being apparent until a "time of change" when puberty is achieved. The Sesperay have children that have a clear gender from the time of birth.
When members of the two archals interbreed their progeny is a blend, with no true distinguishing characteristics and of varied but average appearance. These offspring are called "mixed descent" and are invariably born with a clear gender from birth. While this recessive nature of the Althoi gender-neutral birth does endanger the Althoi long term, in reality such progeny between the two types is unusual in the recent past.
Each archal is further subdivided into two distinctive groups, technically known as "Cognates", based on appearance and physical norms. Historically however, a high percentage of Humans have at one time or another interbred between cognates, such that areas consisting of purely one cognate or another are uncommon. Those born of the exclusive lineage of one cognate or another are known as "Kindred" and have notable physical differences from the "average" human.
Thus, while the technical term for one individual of a particular archal and cognate (e.g. Althoi - Mantaten) with no mixed heritage is a cognate, the entire assemblage of families and relatives of such cognates is known as a kindred. The breeding between between cognates and the ultimate impact on kindreds can be difficult to understand for those not familiar with human genetics, so the chart below helps to summarize this information.

The Althoi are divided into the Mantaten and Sapoy cognates. The Mantaten tend to be big boned with heavy joints, have a dark olive or brown complexion and to be of medium height. Conversely, the Sapoy tend to be slim with elongated features, to have very dark brown or even black skin, and to be on average somewhat taller than their Mantaten brethren.

The Sesperay are divided into the Burdue and Ylthic cognates. The Burdue tend towards pudgyness and to have rounded features, with a fair tan or buff skin, and to be very short. The Ylthic peoples tend to be ruddy, barrel chested and very round-eyed, with very fair or pink skin, and on average to be the tallest of the human cognates.

Demi-Humans also make Trishore their home. The most populous and well known include Elves, Dwarves, Halflings and Gnomes. Humanoids (Orcs, Goblins, Gnolls, etc.) and other races (Giants, Dragons, Centaurs, Crabmen, etc.) thrive here as well.
